New opportunities for breast cancer diagnosis
Today, digital mammography is the most advanced technology for breast cancer diagnosis. However, there is still a lack of sensitivity and specificity, especially when examining dense breasts.
The reason is that it is sometimes difficult to evaluate the two-dimensional representation of overlapping tissues. Other diagnostic imaging modalities, such as CT and MRI, use volumetric imaging (tomography) that minimizes the risk of incorrect assessment in the case of overlapping tissues.
The Digital Breast Tomosynthesis (DBT) system takes a series of low-dose exposures (projections) of the breast at different angles, after which these slices are reconstructed into images of the breast at different heights from the detector. This means that any object detected during the examination is clearly displayed on the multiple slices, allowing a better assessment of the nature, position and size of the suspected pathologic change. .
