Co-60 is a good choice for the treatment of gynecologic and rectal diseases as well as prostate, chest, esophageal, skin and other areas of the body. Eckert & Ziegler BEBIG provides customers with an extensive range of applicators suitable for use with Co-60 and Ir-192 sources.
Favorable dose rate to organs at risk
Treatment with Co-60 results in the organs at risk receiving a lower radiation dose than in the case of Ir-192. Due to its higher average energy of 1.25 MeV, there is less scattering and thus the radial dose function for Co-60 shows slightly lower values than for Ir-192 with an energy of 0.35 MeV. This results in at-risk organs or healthy tissues receiving lower doses within about 20 cm of the source.
Source change period up to 5 years
Because of the long half-life of Co-60, this source can last up to 5 years, which means that during the recommended lifetime of a single Co-60 source, an Ir-192 source would need to be replaced 20 times. The significant time saved in quality control checks after each source replacement makes the use of the Co-60 source particularly attractive for clinics with large patient populations. Moreover, the Co-60 isotope is a choice for those countries with logistical difficulties.
